The most important parts are: what does his son want to do, what the family is able to accomidate, and what is physically the safest choice. My only concern is trying to participate at a level beyond what he is capable of enjoying. Some times young men can get side tracked with the belief that the team or level they play is a reflection of their value. A good teammate doesn't need to score the most goals in the "A" league. I would just be concious to not allow these feeling to enter into future planning. Developmentally I wouldn't sweat it. Many people pick up hockey much later in life with zero practice time and are more then apt players. Long term if the young man sticks with hockey you will be impressed with how much he improves, as long as the enjoyment for the game remains.
