Secret of No-Risk Fundraising with My Sports Dreams

All youth sports coaches and parents search for effective ways to raise money and defray the costs of a season. The My Sports Dreams fundraising program is one possible tool.

My Sports Dreams Case Study: Here is a success story of a high school volleyball team in Wisconsin that used the My Sports Dreams fundraising program to raise money for their team. The interview is with Jason Knott, the team’s head coach.

Would you please provide a brief bio of yourself?

Coach Knott: “I have been the varsity volleyball coach at Edgerton High School in Edgerton, Wisc.,  for eight years. I also coordinate the youth volleyball program as well as being the varsity assistant girl’s basketball coach and coaching middle school track.

What fundraising programs have you implemented in the past?

Coach Knott: “Coupon books, car washes, gift sales, the My Sports Dreams donor program.”

Which fundraising program(s) would you recommend for other youth teams?

Coach Knott: “The My Sports Dreams donor program was by far the easiest and most efficient.”

How did the My Sports Dream program work?

“I supplied a team roster, a picture and a description of my team. The company took care of the rest and printed up 10 colored, personalized flyers for each girl. We had each of our 48 kids make a list of 10 names of people they were reasonably sure would donate.

We met with the kids for about 30 minutes after the flyers came in and had them personally address each of their 10 letters and sign them. Each girl brought 10 stamps and affixed them to their letters. We mailed them out for the kids and then just waited for the donations to come in. Donors also had the option of donating online and if they did so, My Sports Dreams matched 10 percent of the online donations.

I was skeptical at first, but the money began rolling in about a week later and continued for 12 weeks. We ended up profiting nearly $6,800 with little to no work on our part. My Sports Dreams offers a website to keep track of your donors and money, which made record keeping easy.

We printed up thank-you cards and had all the girls send personalized thank-you’s to all the donors on their list that donated. I can’t think of a better fundraiser than this. A lot of people said they were happy to donate rather than being asked to buy something they wouldn’t use anyway. It is also a no-risk fundraiser. My Sports Dreams has a stipulation that their fee for the mailers is adjusted if you for some reason didn’t make as much.”

What is an average dollar amount per family that other teams should expect to receive from implementing this program?

Coach Knott: “We averaged about $140 per girl. Some generated donations of $900 to $1,000.”
